Improve your English! Practise questions and negative forms.

Mar 27, 2012

Hi guys.

So yesterday we talked about how to form questions. Today we’re going to revise that and talk about negatives.

The  question form is QUASV.

Remember:

All questions need an auxiliary except :

  1. 1. questions where the main verb is be

  2. 2. subject questions

Example of a normal question- Where are you going?

Example of a question with be as the main verb- What is the time?

Example of a subject question- What happened?

Remember, questions where the main verb is be or subject questions can have an auxiliary (e.g. Who is making that noise?) but only if the tense requires it.

There are very similar rules for negative sentences.

All negatives need an auxiliary except:

  1. 1. negatives where the main verb is be.

In each of the following sentences, the main verb is in bold and the auxiliary, if there is one, is in italics.

  1. I don’t have any money.

  2. The woman wasn’t trying to steal anything.

  3. My mum has never been to Africa.

  4. We won’t go if you don’t want us to.

  5. I can’t kick a football to save my life.

  6. If he hadn’t saved my life I’d be dead.

  7. Im not happy with the English classes.

  8. Of course I haven’t taken your watch.

On Thursday we’re going to practise negatives and questions and look at some common mistakes.

See you then and good luck with your English.
