A List of Useful Blogs to Help with Learning English

Jan 20, 2017

At the Islington Centre for English, we know the difficulties of learning English and how daunting the UK can be without being fluent. While we provide a very wide range of accessible, informative and engaging courses to suit students of all abilities, we would also recommend using a few blogs during your spare time to reinforce your knowledge.

These are all fun, interesting and worthwhile sites for you to work on, either casually or for more serious revision. Each has its own features that make it so successful, and may also share other characteristics. So, let's take a look at some useful blogs for your English studies, in no particular order.

Espresso English

The Espresso English site is a witty and interesting tool for US English (so be careful not to mix up your UK 'colours' with US 'colors' etc.), and the blog is fun and useful. Frequently updated with lists, articles, lessons and E-book downloads, it is a popular blog for a very good reason.

Pearson English

The Pearson blog not only teaches about the usual grammar and spelling, it offers very interesting insight into why English is important, as well as its function in the global business world. The slightly more formal tone of Pearson may seem scary, but stick with it.

RealLife English

RealLife English's blog offers fantastic podcasts for you to stream or download - making a change from the usual online lessons and scribbled notes! With RealLife, you can listen when you're on the go, and take advantages of fun and accessible learning ideas such as Learn English With TV, which allows you to learn English from classic TV series such as Friends.

English With a Twist

This award-winning blog allows you to learn English for the business world, learning the language of deal making, diplomacy and general vocabulary skills. A more advanced level of English might be required here, but the teaching and writing are excellent, and many can benefit from it.

MyEnglishTeacher.eu

This one hasn't been updated for a while, but is a valuable source of well-written educational blog posts on learning English, dealing with everything from popular idioms to make you sound as though English is your native tongue, to formal and informal email phrases for that all important job application.

Rolls Off The Tongue

For an interesting, fun approach - though not one that offers any formal English training - this blog is excellent. It teaches you why various English jokes are funny - allowing you to think and consider the deeper meaning behind words and why they matter. A very funny, very useful blog, but perhaps better for more casual use.

ESL Hip-Hop

You will no doubt have heard English spoken through Hip-Hop music on TV and the radio, but this clever, immersive site allows you to actually learn English through Hip-Hop. There are huge amounts of lessons in grammar and vocabulary, and the site is particularly well formatted and well written.
