Idiom of the week - To be as cool as a cucumber (adjective idiom)

Jul 09, 2014

Idioms can be very difficult to work out the meaning of - that's because if something is an idiom then the meaning is not clear from the words in the phrase! A cucumber is a green vegetable which is mainly made of water, and as such is much colder (or cooler!) than the surrounding temperature. To be as cool as a cucumber means being extremely calm and composed, a bit like Germany in the Germany vs. Brazil World Cup football match!
